Ericsson expands CIO role – and other recent appointments

Communications technology and services giant Ericsson has appointed Anders Thulin as its new CIO and SVP for business excellence across the group. In his new role, Thulin joins the Ericsson leadership team and will also head a newly formed unit, Group Function Business Excellence & Common Functions, which covers IT, shared services, real estate, and process and information.

Thulin will report directly to president and CEO Hans Vestberg, who is leading a multi-year business transformation program at the Swedish company. “With a strong background and knowledge in the high-tech, IT and telecom industries, Anders will further strengthen our strategy execution and governance capabilities,” he said.

Thulin has been tasked with implementing global scale improvements across the company, which has more than 110,000 employees in more than 180 countries, while honing the focus on delivering profitable growth through his application of business excellence.

A 25-year veteran of management consultancy McKinsey & Co, where he was most recently a senior partner, Thulin brings more than two decades of experience working across the ICT sector.
Other key appointments

AUSTRALIA
Carolyn De Gois has been appointed CIO at Public Transport Victoria (PTV). The move comes as PTV undergoes a comprehensive review of its IT operations. De Gois previously headed the Victorian IT strategy and performance practice within KPMG.

FRANCE
Laurent Benatar is now technical director of Orange France. He will also retain his role as information systems director, which he has held for the past three years. Benatar has spent his entire career with Orange, having joined the Group in 1992.
• After his appointment as director of information systems for TUI France in January 2012, Jérôme Picard will also become CIO for airline Corsair (another TUI Group subsidiary), from December. Picard has previously worked at Opodo/Vivacances and Marmara.

SWITZERLAND
From January 2014, Patrick Freudiger will officially become CIO at car importer AMAG. He has held the position on an interim basis since June of this year.
• Thomas Hasler will become CTO of Swiss speciality chemicals company Sika from January 2014. He’s currently head of its global automotive division, and has been at Sika since 1989.

SINGAPORE
Online property portal group PropertyGuru Group has hired Ifor Evans as CTO. He was previously at IT services company Misys in the UK, and has also served in roles at Betfair and dunnhumby.

UK
OANDA Europe, a subsidiary of global foreign exchange trading services company OANDA Corp, has appointed Graeme Whittington as its new CTO. He joins from BlackBerry, where he held a range of senior roles in product management and software, with a focus on infrastructure systems.

US
Michael Whitehead is now CIO and SVP at Connolly, the largest recovery audit firm in the world. Whitehead has previously held senior leadership roles in organizations including Siemens, Cap Gemini, Millennium Chemicals, McCormick & Co, and Johnson & Johnson.
• At Goldman Sachs Group, Martin Chavez has become CIO, following the retirement of Steven Scopellite, a 28-year veteran of the bank's technology group. Don Duet and Paul Walker are promoted to co-heads of technology, both reporting to Chavez.
Recall, a secure document management company, has hired Rohan Pal as its new global CIO. Pal was formerly CIO and COO for Tyco Fire Protection Products. Recall has regional offices in London, Sydney and Kuala Lumpur, with its global HQ in Atlanta.
• James Roser has been made CIO at Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance. Roser was most recently IT head of global insurance, global reinsurance and associated infrastructure at Markel.
The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has named Paul Tuxford as its new CIO. He joins from Credit Suisse, where he served as COO of corporate services technology and head of human resources IT, among other roles.
The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) has hired John McCoskey as EVP and CTO. He was previously CTO of PBS. MPAA has also appointed Alex Deacon to the newly created role of SVP of Internet technology.
• Ned Curic is the new VP and CTO at Toyota Motor Sales USA. In this newly created role, Curic reports to North American CIO Zack Hicks. Curic was mostly recently at Microsoft.
