Global CIO appointments

Our regular round-up of the latest major CIO appointments from around the world:

AUSTRALIA

Airline operator Qantas has appointed Paul Jonesas its new CIO, who joins from chocolate manufacturers Mars. He replaces Chris Seller.

Long-time chief information & technology officer of subscription TV provider Austar, Dean Walters, has left for a position in Europe (see Netherlands appointments). His role is being jointly filled by Phil Blackwell, general manager of technology and operations, and Brian Matulin, general manager of information systems.

Former New South Wales Housing CIO, Vladas Leonas, has taken the top IT job at another NSW government department, the NSW Transport Construction Authority.

The Department of Services, Technology and Administration has appointed Andrew Gavrielatos to the position of acting CIO while it seeks a replacement for former CIO, Emmanuel Rodriguez, who left at the end of last year.

GERMANY

Frederic Wohlwend has become CIO of Merck, succeeding Kai Beckmann who has joined the pharmaceuticals and chemicals company’s executive board as global HR director.

NEW ZEALAND

Brendan Boyle, the chief executive of the Department of Internal Affairs, has assumed the additional title of New Zealand Government CIO.

Nigel Prince, formerly CIO at the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, has become the ministry’s deputy director for general business services.

RUSSIA

Otkritie Financial Corporation has appointed the former head of IT at UBS, Sergey Rozov, as its new CTO for its investment and banking business.

SINGAPORE

Semi-conductor and LED manufacturer Kulicke & Soffa Industries has appointed Clay Miller as SVP of shared resources (HR and IT) and CIO.

SWITZERLAND

Andrew Abboud, who was CIO at London’s City University, has become CIO at Laureate Education Group.

THE NETHERLANDS

Austar’s Dean Walters (see Australia, above) has become the new CIO for Liberty Global’s UPC Broadband division, which delivers cable television, broadband Internet and voice services across Europe.

UK

TalkTalk CIO David Cooper has left the broadband/phone service provider to join British Gas as CIO, working alongside David Bickerton, the global CIO of its parent company, Centrica. Clive Dorsman, MD of technology at TalkTalk, has taken over Cooper’s responsibility for IT.

André Snoxall has become interim CIO at London’s City University.

David Chapman has left his job as IT director of JobCentre Plus at the Department for Work and Pensions to join BP.

Former NatWest and Pearson Edexcel IT director Lester Pulsford has become European CIO for the marketing technology and services specialist of Acxiom.

US

President Barack Obama has moved Al Tarasiuk, the former CIO of the CIA, into a wider role as the new CIO for the Intelligence Community, a body comprising 17 US intelligence agencies.

Airline Virgin America has announced the appointment of Dean Cookson as the company's new CIO.

Advertising, marketing communications, media and brand equity research company Millward Brown has made Ronald Markham its new CIO.

Allegiant Travel has appointed Scott Allard as CIO.

Former City of San Francisco CIO Chris Vein has become deputy US CTO for government innovation in the Office of Science and Technology Policy, Executive Office of the President.

International ratings agency Fitch has announced the appointment of Robert Harpel as group managing director and CTO.

Savient Pharmaceuticals has strengthened its management team with the appointment of Stephen Davies as CIO and group VP.

Barclays Capital has hired Joe Squeri from Goldman Sachs as CIO for corporate/investment banking and wealth management and CIO for the Americas region.

Sandy Spring Bank has promoted John Sadowski to CIO and EVP.

News Corporation
has reinforced its push into digital media, naming a former AOL executive as its CTO, as John McKinley is appointed to the dual role of CTO and president of technology.

Paul Obermeyer has been named EVP and CIO for financial services company Comerica.

STAR Financial banking group has hired a new CIO, with Daniel O'Connor coming in from United Federal Credit Union.

The City of Minneapolis has appointed Otto Doll as its new CIO.

Joe LaFeir has been made SVP and CIO for the automotive supplier of RL Polk.

The US and Swiss international fitness club chain Town Sports International Holdings has appointed Paul Barron as its CIO.

Health Dialog Services has announced the appointment of Bill Pelzar as its CIO.

Thomas Deangelo has been appointed CIO at the law firm Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick.

Former Oracle executive Kristin Russell has become secretary of technology and CIO for the State of Colorado.

David Behen is the new CIO for the State of Michigan.

Sean Vinck is to serve as CIO for the State of Illinois.

Bill Rogers has become the State of New Hampshire’s commissioner of the Department of IT.

The State of Minnesota has a new CIO, with Carolyn Parnell being named head of the Office of Enterprise Technology.

Electronics manufacturer Ametek has appointed Kenneth Weirman as VP and CIO, replacing William P Lawson, who has retired.

MLSListings has made Jeremy Crawford CIO for its nationwide real estate agent, broker and affiliate network.

The Primary Care and Hope Clinic has announced Sean Gilliland as its new CIO.

Unified communications business Polycom has announced the appointment of Ari Bose as SVP and CIO.

Merlin Securities has appointed Robert Garrett, former global head of execution services technology at Deutsche Bank, as its new CTO.

David Hogan has moved on from the CIO’s position at the National Retail Federation.

Baltimore City Public Schools System has appointed Jerome Oberlton its new chief information technology officer.

Alex Vaillancourt has been named CIO at The Christ Hospital, Cincinnati.

Carol Knouse, former CIO and SVP of fashion house Donna Karan International, has moved to Cetova Corp as VP of customer care.

Arnold Viramontes, chief of staff for the Dallas Independent School District, has become chief technology information officer with the Houston Independent School District.

Leading fast-food chain Jack in the Box has promoted Michael Verdesca to VP and CIO.

Health Dialog has announced the appointment of Bill Pelzar as CIO.

ON Semiconductor has appointed Hans Stork to the position of CTO and SVP.

Pacific University has named Jim Fleming its CIO.

Tom West has been appointed VP of IT and CIO at Nova Southeastern University.

CARSTAR, the auto body repair chain, has announced the addition of Brad Rein as its CIO.
