Global CIO appointments

Our regular round-up of the latest major CIO appointments from around the world:

AUSTRALIA

The NSW Department of Education & Training (DET) has appointed Stephen Loquet as its new CIO.

The Australian Agency for International Development’s CIO Shane McLeod has joined the Department of Veterans Affairs as its tech chief.

CIO at brewing giant Fosters Group Andrew Leyden has left the company and will be replaced by transformation director Donna Watt.

The Department of Health and Ageing has announced the appointment of former Australian Taxation Office business solutions manager Paul Madden as its new chief information and knowledge officer.

CHINA

Airport Authority Hong Kong has appointed logistics and supply chain specialist Andy Bien as its CIO.

David West has become IT director, Hong Kong & Macau, of Dairy Farm Group. He was previously the Thailand-based IT Director of Tesco Lotus.

Jeremy Godfrey has left the post of Hong Kong Government CIO, with Stephen Mak, deputy government CIO (consulting and operations), stepping up on an interim basis as GCIO.

NEW ZEALAND

The CIO of weather forecaster MetService, Russell Turner, has taken up a similar role at Land Information New Zealand.

SOUTH AFRICA

Telecommunications provider MTN has announced Lambo Kanagaratnam as its new CTO.

SWITZERLAND

Erich Hunziker, CFO and acting CIO of pharma giant Roche, will retire at the end of March, to be replaced by Alan Hippe, from German tire maker Continental.

UK

Retail giant Tesco has promoted its current IT director Mike McNamara into the CIO position, a post vacated by Philip Clarke, who has become the CEO.

Richard Cross, the former CIO of broadcaster ITV, has been appointed group CIO at engineering firm Arup.

Joe Harley, formerly CIO at the UK Department of Work and Pensions, has replaced outgoing government CIO John Suffolk as UK Government CIO.

Paul Coby, CIO and head of services of British Airways has decided to leave the company as it merges with the Spanish airline Iberia.

CTO John Linwood will head up a new technology division at the BBC, which will be responsible for delivering the corporation’s production, broadcast, connectivity and enterprise support.

No replacement has yet been named for the CIO of Aurora Fashions, John Bovill, who has announced he is to leave the retailer.

US

Diversified industrial group Ingersoll Rand has announced the appointment of Archana Deskus as VP and CIO, coming in from watchmakers Timex Group where she served as SVP and CIO.

President Barack Obama has appointed Susan Lawrence as the new US Army CIO. She replaces Lt. Gen. Jeffrey Sorenson, who retired in November.

Home improvement retail chain Lowe’s Companies has announced the appointment of Michael K Brown to EVP and CIO, as replacement for outgoing CIO Steven M Stone.

eLayaway, the payment processor, has announced that Larry Witherspoon has been appointed its new CIO.

Gary Reiner, former CIO at GE, has joined the board of HP.

Thomas G Stephens has been appointed to a newly created position of CTO, overseeing all research and development at General Motors.

New Hampshire governor John Lynch has named Bill Rogers as commissioner of the state’s Department of IT.

NaviNet, America’s largest real-time healthcare communications network, has made John Kelly its new CIO.

Former Food & Drug Adminstration CIO, Lori Davis, has joined tech provider 2020 Company as its SVP of Healthcare.

Defence company QinetiQ North America has announced the appointment of John Lambeth as its CIO.

Airline manufacturer Boeing has named Kim Hammonds as CIO and VP of the company’s IT organisation.

Gary Hayes has joined CenterPoint Energy as CIO and VP, IT.

IT services provider MphasiS has appointed Ann Weaver, formerly CIO for global products at insurance group Aon, as head of its insurance industry solutions group.

NASA has appointed Valarie Burks as its deputy CIO for information technology security.

Media company ALM has appointed Jeffrey K Whittle as its new chief technology and digital products officer.

Kanon Cozad has been named as CIO at transportation consultancy TranSystems.

First Northern Bank has named Bruce Orris executive vice president and CIO.

Applied Materials, which produces manufacturing equipment for the high-tech industry, has appointed Omkaram Nalamasu as its CTO.

Beam Global Spirits & Wine has announced the appointment of Tom McPartlin as VP, CIO and business systems transformation leader.

Schawk, the brand point management company, has appointed Gary Rietz as CIO.

Paint manufacturer Valspar has appointed Cynthia Arnold its SVP and CTO.

Lawson Products, a distributor of industrial maintenance and repair supplies, has promoted Bob Border to the role of SVP and CIO.

The National Nuclear Security Administration has named Robert Osborn as its CIO.

Ameristar Casinos has announced that Sheleen Quish has been promoted to SVP of IT and HR.

Hospitality group Marriott International has announced that Carl Wilson, EVP and CIO at the company since 1997, will retire on March 31 to be replaced by Bruce Hoffmeister as global CIO.

The Motion Picture Association of America has named Paul Brigner as its first SVP and chief technology policy officer.

Eric Singleton has been named as AOL’s SVP, technologies after serving as CIO for the Tommy Hilfiger retail chain. Michael Manos has also joined AOL as SVP, technology operations, reporting to Alex Gounares, the company’s CTO.

Ed Cruz will be CIO, bureau of information technology, for the government of Guam.

Bookseller Borders has lost Scott Laverty as its CIO, and his replacement remains unconfirmed.

CNO Financial Group
has made Todd Coombes SVP and CIO.

American Utility Management has appointed Ken Levin as its CIO.

H J Heinz has announced that its CIO, Karen Alber, has left the company to pursue another career opportunity, and will be replaced by Isobel Thomson, who is promoted to CIO, with Meg Nollen becoming global program management officer.

Morgan Stanley COO Jim Rosenthal has announced that Ivan Freeman, global head of technology and data, will be taking a sabbatical. Stephen Daffron, current global head of operations, will oversee the technology organisation, with the CIOs of the various business units reporting directly into Daffron.

Thomas Jansen has been appointed CIO for Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corporation.

Blaine Helmick has been named director of information and creative technologies at Technomedia.

Georgia Technology Authority has announced that Calvin Rhodes has been named GTA executive director and State CIO.
