Our regular round-up of the latest major CIO appointments from around the world:

AUSTRALIA

Job advertisement company Seek has appointed former Nike and GAP IT director David Gibbons as its CIO, effective from October.

Jeffrey Peterson has been appointed CIO with global responsibility for engineering and property services company UGL Services.

Mining-to-chemicals company Orica has appointed former Shell executive Morgan Hurwitz as its group CIO.

Financial services group Credit Union Australia CIO Barry Los is retiring after 14 years. His replacement has not yet been announced.

Logistics firm Brambles has announced the appointment of Jean Holley as Group SVP and CIO, effective from 1 September 2011.

The state of Queensland is looking to recruit its first ever CIO.

CHINA

Insurance and finance group MetLife has appointed Terence Yeung as VP and head of IT for Hong Kong.

Media company South China Morning Post has named Augustus Chow as assistant director of group IT infrastructure and business systems.

GERMANY

The Technical University of Munich (Technische Universität München) has appointed Hans Pongratz as its new CIO.

Optical systems manufacturer Carl Zeiss has appointed Hans Achim Quitmann as its first CIO. He was previously CIO at Hamburg-based copper producer Aurubis.

Banking group KfW has appointed Edeltraud Leibrock, previously CIO at bank BayernLB, as CIO and COO.

Heike Raab is the new IT officer for Rhineland-Palatinate. She succeeds Jürgen Häfner, who was the state’s first CIO.

SOUTH KOREA

Standard Chartered Bank has named Alexander Kim as CIO for Korea. He joins from the Korea Exchange Bank.

INDIA

Jai Menon has rejoined telecommunications company Airtel as the head of IT for India and Africa.

NEW ZEALAND

NZ Police is currently seeking its first permanent CIO. Its former ICT manager, Murray Mitchell, will be acting CIO until the position is filled.

TAIWAN

The city authority of Taichung has appointed Chang Chung-chi as its new IT director.

UK

David Smith, formerly CIO and CTO of Fujitsu UK & Ireland, has been promoted to chief innovation and technology officer for the company’s Global Business Group.

The former CIO of ING Direct UK, Peter Knight, has taken up the role of CTO at payment service provider GlobalCollect.

Former UK government CIO John Suffolk has joined Chinese telecommunications company Huawei as its global cyber security officer.

LCH.Clearnet has named Tom Zschach as group CIO.

Airport operator BAA has appointed Simon Fell as its first CTO.

Transport for London, the authority responsible for most of the UK capital’s public transport systems, has appointed Steve Townsend as its new CIO. He succeeds Ian Campbell.

Katie Davis is now the interim CIO for the Department of Health. She was previously executive director of operational excellence for the Efficiency and Reform Group in the Cabinet Office.

USA

The White House has confirmed that Steven VanRoekel, a former Microsoft executive, will become the next CIO for the US federal government. He succeeds Vivek Kundra who has left to take up a fellowship at Harvard University.

Thomas A. Hull has joined Pace University as VP and CIO.

Kevin Quinlivan is now the first CIO of Delaware North Companies, a global hospitality and food service firm.

Office supply chain store Staples has promoted Christine Putur to CIO.

Technology giant Honeywell has announced Mike Lang as the company’s new VP and CIO.

Post University has named Michael Statmore as its CIO.

Pharmaceutical products manufacturer Lannett Company has announced the promotion of Robert Ehlinger to the position of VP of logistics and CIO.

Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco has appointed Elena Andreadakis as its SVP and CIO.

Utilities holding company Southern Company has named Kenneth E. Coleman as SVP and CIO.

Bask Iyer has been appointed as SVP and CIO at networking products manufacturer Juniper Networks.

Language Services Associates (LSA), a global language services provider, has promoted Mauricio Vicente to CIO.

Frank Baitman, CIO at the US Social Security Office, has resigned. Kelly Croft, deputy commissioner for systems, is taking on his CIO duties.

Dwayne Warner has been named VP and CIO for Miami-based Carnival Cruise Lines.

Robert Meilen has been appointed CIO at Hunter Douglas, the national windows manufacturer.

Arne Herenstein has been appointed SVP and CIO at insurance company Harleysville Group.

Atlantic Power Corporation has announced the appointment of Charles W. Poppe, Jr. as interim CIO.

Timothy M. Chester has been made CIO at the University of Georgia.

Massachusetts has named John Letchford as the state’s new CIO.

Intrexon, a synthetic biology company, has appointed Timothy D. Kasbe as its SVP and CIO.

The National Student Clearinghouse has named Doug Falk as its CIO.

Bank holding company Western Alliance Bancorporation has appointed Dennis Rygwalski as executive vice president of technology and operations. He joins from financial services company BOK Financial, where he was CTO.
