Is the world's largest social networking site about to target the corporate space?
Facebook may be poised to follow other consumer-first brands, such as Google, into the corporate space. In collaboration with Microsoft (which holds a 1.6% stake in Facebook) it has launched Docs.com, set to rival Google Docs as an online collaborative tool. Currently in beta test, it will allow its users to access an online version of Microsoft Office and share documents for both viewing and editing.
Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has described it as: "All of the power of the Microsoft Office suite online, with a simple Facebook integration."
Docs.com is aimed at consumers, as opposed to Google's more business-focused Apps package. However, as a growing number of enterprises allow employees to access online networking sites from corporate devices, there's a strong chance that Docs.com could help Facebook to become many organisations' de facto collaborative tool before IT departments can say "social media policy".
